Reading the Quran

We strive to create one of the most convenient tools for reading the Holy Quran. Already today you can find in it a whole set of unique features that are not found almost anywhere else.

  • Interlinear translation by words. You can see the translation of each word of the Qur'an in the language that suits you. Already now we have an almost completed translation into Russian, a translation into English has been uploaded to the site, and work is underway to translate the words of the Koran into Bashkir, Tajik, Azerbaijani and Turkish.
  • Many tafseers. You have the opportunity to open one of the seven main tafsirs of the Koran in Arabic, as well as the two most famous tafsirs in Russian: al-Muntahab and al-Saadi. Also, our volunteers are working to connect to our site the translation of tafsir ibn Kathir.

At the moment, we have the following learning mechanisms available for use:

There are many translations of the Koran in Russian, and we will talk today with Fares Nofal about their advantages and disadvantages compared to the Arabic original.

For Fares, Arabic is his native language, he knows the Koran well, as he studied in Saudi Arabia. At the same time, he speaks and writes fluently in Russian and, accordingly, can assess both the strengths and weaknesses of various translations of the Koran into Russian.

1. Fares, what is the status of any translation of the Qur'an in the eyes of Muslims?

It is quite natural that any translation is a distortion of the original source through the prism of the translator's vision of the text. And therefore the Quran, being a sacred book, was sent down in the Arabic language and is fully revealed only in the original source. Muslims quite correctly call any translations "translations of meanings." Indeed, when conveying the meaning, the quite scientific philological side is often forgotten, which the authors of translations can neglect to explain the meaning, inserting explanations that do not exist in the text. Therefore, translations of the Koran are perceived strictly as semantic transmissions, unequal to the original source.

2. In your opinion, is it possible to adequately convey the meaning of the Koran in Russian, or is it impossible to do without knowledge of the Arabic language in this matter?

To answer this question, several points need to be noted. First, the distance in time between the seventh century and the twenty-first century left a huge imprint on the philological side of the text. Now for the Arabs themselves, the style of the Koran, its vocabulary is not as clear as it was for the first Muslims. Still, the Quran is a monument of antiquity, and it needs a special approach. Secondly, the Koran was written in Arabic using Arabic phraseology and vocabulary, which is largely alien to Slavic languages. Here is a simple example. In verse 75:29 there is an expression " turn around (converge) shin with shin ". There is no such turnover in the Russian language, and it is symbolic. It is also important to remember that this text has an exceptional religious significance, and therefore it is important to note precisely this specificity without deviating from the original text. Of course, this is difficult, and the translator needs deep knowledge both in the Arabic language and Arabic studies in general, and in Islam. Without this, translation can go very far.

3. How many translations of the Quran are there in Russian?

The history of translations of the Koran into Russian, in my opinion, is extremely tragic. The first translation (and this is the time of Peter I) was made not from the original, but from the French translation of that time. The very first scientific translation of the Holy Scriptures of Muslims was made, oddly enough, by an Orthodox apologist, professor of KazDA Gordy Semenovich Sablukov, in the 19th century. It was only at the beginning of the 20th century that Academician Ignaty Yulianovich Krachkovsky completed his work on the now widespread translation of the meanings of the Koran. Then the first poetic translation of Shumovsky appears, and after that - the famous translations of V.M. Powder, M.-N. O. Osmanova and E.R. Kuliev. In 2003, a translation by B.Ya. Shidfar, but did not receive such popularity as the replicated translations of Krachkovsky, Kuliev, Osmanov and Porokhova. It is about them that I prefer to speak, because they are referred to in polemics by most Muslims of various currents.

4. Could you briefly describe the strengths and weaknesses of the various translations?

The weakest side of all translations is an attempt to correlate translation and artistic form (and it must be remembered that the Koran is still prose, in which the literary device "Saja" a "is used - the same endings of the last letters of the sentence). For example, Porokhova uses its translation in the form of blank verse, however, any Arab understands that this is no longer a translation, but a paraphrase, and to a large extent Christianized - what is the replacement of the word "slave" with the word "servant" in many places (for example, 21:105). whole phrases are inserted that are absent in the original only for the beauty of the form.In order not to be unfounded, I will give an example from ayat 2:164, where the translator puts in the text, the original form of which is extremely succinctly conveyed by Krachkovsky in the words " and in a subordinate cloud, between heaven and earth" integer expression: " That the clouds between heaven and earth How they overtake their servants ". It is unlikely that such a translation can be called scientific, and with all due respect to Valeria Mikhailovna, one can only speak of the work of an amateur both in Arabic philology and in the field of Islam.

More interesting is Kuliev's translation. Lacking - like Porokhov - an oriental education, Elmir Rafael ogly looked at the text through the eyes of a Muslim. Here we see a fairly high accuracy, which, however, disappears in difficult places. Kuliev also takes responsibility for inserting "additions" into the text that are not in the text, but which, according to the translator, are correct. So, for example, Kuliyev takes the liberty of asserting that the mysterious "Uzayr son of Allah", revered by the Jews, is the priest Ezra, the spiritual leader of the Jews of the period of the second temple era. Why? After all, even in the interpretations (to which Kuliev returned in the translation) there is no direct reference to Ezra. Many Arabists notice in Kuliev that the words and phrases of the original are replaced with their own synonyms and phrases, which also reduces the quality of the translation as a scientific work.

Magomed-Nuri Osmanov's translation deserves special mention. The doctor of philosophical sciences carried out a titanic work, the purpose of which was to reveal to Muslims the meaning of the verses of the Koran. However, the professor, like Kuliev, prefers his own retelling to the interlinear one (it can be noted as an example ayat 2:170, when in the phrase "Caught Our Fathers" the word "caught" was replaced by the word "stood"). Neglecting the artistic style, Osmanov, for the sake of clarity of the text, makes a scientifically significant mistake - he inserts a tafsir (interpretation) into the text itself. For example, clearly in the text of verse 17:24 there is no expression " have mercy on them as they [pardoned] and raised me as a child". There are two errors in the small passage - there is neither the word "pardoned" nor the word "raised" in the original. Krachkovsky's translation is more accurate: " have mercy on them how they raised me small". The meaning changes only slightly. But the level of objectivity, of course, falls. In general, the translation is not bad, if you distinguish between the text of the tafsir and the text of the Koran itself, i.e. we can say that the translation is intended for readers (more Muslims), already enough acquainted with Islam as such.

The translation of Academician Krachkovsky is dry and academic. However, it is he who, as an interlinear, is the best transmitter of the meaning of the Qur'an. Krachkovsky did not mix interpretations and the text into "one heap", and was guided primarily by scientific interest. Here you will not find any willful inserts or arrangements. The translation is equally good for both the student of the Arabic language and the religious scholar-researcher. It is he who does not hide the places that are problematic for the controversy, and thus is interesting for anyone interested in the problems of comparative theology and religious studies.

5. Have you met frank semantic forgeries in any translations of the Koran?

Yes. It is noteworthy that I met them in greater numbers in the most "ideologized" translations - by Kuliev and Porokhova. I will give an example concerning an area that has already been touched upon by us - the rights of women. Particular attention of the public is riveted to the problem of concubines, for which Islam hears public reproaches every day. And Porokhova decided to smooth out this "sharp" angle with deceit - in her translation of ayat 70:30 phraseological unit "those that their right hands seized"- that is, concubines - was replaced by the phrase "a slave, (whom he gave freedom and accepted as a wife)". There is a deliberate forgery in one of the most controversial precepts of Islam.

The aforementioned translators treated verse 17:16 no less harshly. While Krachkovsky (" And when We wished to destroy a village, We gave orders to those bestowed with blessings in it, and they did wickedness there; then the word was justified over him, and We destroyed him completely.) and Osmanov (" When We wanted to destroy [the inhabitants] of any village, then by Our will their rich people indulged in wickedness, so that predestination was carried out, and We destroyed them to the last") are more or less in solidarity, then Porokhova translates one of the main verses that tells about predestination and the will of Allah about people as follows: " When We wanted to destroy the city (for the mortal sins of its people), We sent a command to those of them who were endowed with blessings in it - and yet they did wickedness - Then the Word was justified over it, and We destroyed it to the ground ". Kuliev moved even further away from the original: " When We wanted to destroy a village, We commanded its pampered luxury to submit to Allah. When they indulged in wickedness, the Word came true concerning him, and We destroyed him completely.". For unknown reasons, the last two translators forgot about the particle "f", which means causality in Arabic, replacing it with the conjunction "and", and about the vocabulary, and inserted non-existent particles. For an inexperienced reader, I will present an interlinear: “Wa itha (and if) aradna (we want to) an nahlika (destroy) qaryatan (any village) amarna (we command) mutrafeeha (her life-bound wrongdoers) fa fasaqoo (and they will create lawlessness) feeha (in it) fa haqqa (and it will be done) Aalayha (in her) alqawlu (word) fadammarnaha (and destroyed) tadmeeran [inf. previous word, perfect degree]".

That is, simply put, the reader is being fooled into believing in something that the original source is silent about. But, unfortunately, this is kept silent by both secular and Muslim Arabists, theologians, and Orientalists.

6. What Russian translation of the Quran do you consider the most adequate to your Arabic source and why?

Of course, Krachkovsky's translation. The academician's religious neutrality, his exclusively scientific approach and undoubtedly high qualifications only favorably influenced the quality of the translation. Despite its complexity for perception, this translation is the best reflection of the words of the original source. However, do not forget about interpretations. An adequate perception of the meanings of the Qur'an is impossible without an analysis of the historical, theological contexts of the Qur'anic quotations. Without this, any translation will be incomprehensible, even the translations of Osmanov and Kuliev. Let's be objective.

1975 is the year of birth of Elmir Kuliev. He started attending school at the age of five. However, such a young age did not prevent him from studying with honors. For all ten years of study at the 102nd school in Baku, he did not receive a single four. During his studies, Elmir was not at all interested in religious issues and, moreover, did not read books reflecting religious topics.

Since 1990, at the age of 15, Elmir Guliyev studied at the Azerbaijan Medical Institute at the Faculty of Dentistry, having done an excellent job with the profiling exam. Together with Elmir, students from Palestine studied dental craft. From conversations with them, Kuliyev first learned about Islam and the rituals of performing prayers, after which he became interested in this religion. Studying aspects of religion, Elmir Kuliyev became more interested in the Arabic language. Kuliyev decided to start attending Arabic language courses. For more effective learning, Kuliev acquired an Arabic dictionary, which he often worked with at home. Over time, studying from two to three hours a day, Kuliev began to memorize up to 30 new Arabic words daily. Such a zeal for learning the language allowed him to master the Arabic language perfectly in a fairly short time. Subsequently, Elmir decided to start translating Arabic books into Russian.

Today Elmir Kuliev is a scientific editor of a number of books. He created about fifty articles and translations of theological books into Russian, moreover, translations not only from Arabic, but also from Azerbaijani and English. However, the main work is undoubtedly the semantic translation of the Koran by Elmir Kuliev. This work was completed in 2002. Later, Kuliev created some additions and comments to the work. The translation of the Quran is constantly being improved by Elmir Kuliev, who is used to doing all his work flawlessly!

Advantages of reading the semantic translation of the Qur'an.

The Koran in Russian now exists in large numbers. You can find it in any mosque, in addition, you can read the Koran in Russian on the Internet on sites dedicated to the religion of Islam. For reading the Quran in Russian, a Muslim will certainly receive a good reward, since the desire to understand the essence of what is read fills the Muslim mind with the necessary knowledge about Islam and the information set forth in the Holy Scriptures.

As stated in one of the hadiths of the Prophet of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam):

“Whoever has embarked on the path of acquiring knowledge, Allah will ease the path to Paradise for him. The angels spread their wings over him, rejoicing for him. Every creature in heaven and on earth, even fish in the water, ask for forgiveness of the sins of the one who receives knowledge. The dignity of an alim over an abid (a simple worshiper) is similar to the dignity of the full moon over the rest of the stars.. (Abu Dawud, Hadith 3641, narrated by Abu Darda).

The hadith testifies that everyone who tries to read the Koran in Russian and understand what they read will find it easier to get into the Gardens of Eden. But often when reading the Koran in Russian, the reader has numerous questions, since there are a large number of verses that are difficult to interpret. Often it is almost impossible to understand what you read on your own. To facilitate the understanding of the written translation of the Koran in Russian, interpretations of the Holy Scriptures, or tafsirs, were created. The interpretation of the Quran is a painstaking work carried out over many years by the most eminent scholars of Islam.

The best reading of the Quran in Russian is considered to be reading it using interpretations. Only with the use of tafseers can a Muslim understand the meaning of the Qur'an as effectively as possible. Reflection on the meaning of sacred words gives a Muslim a better understanding of his religion, to draw competent conclusions regarding the further organization of his life, the possibility of achieving the right path of following Islam.

To strive to read the Koran first in Russian, using and studying tafseers, then to read the Koran in Arabic, keeping in mind the meaning of the Arabic words of the Holy Scripture read and thinking about them, every true Muslim should. Thus, he no longer just mindlessly rereads the Arabic letters of the Qur'an, but reads it with complete understanding. And reading the Qur'an in Arabic and understanding the text gives more sawab than reading the Qur'an in Russian or reading the Qur'an in Arabic without understanding.

Surah Al-Falyak

When it comes to short surahs from the Quran, one immediately recalls the very often read Surah Al-Falyak, which is incredibly powerful both in the semantic and ethical sense. Translated from Arabic, "Al-Falyak" means "Dawn", which already says a lot.

Surah Al-Ikhlas

Very short, easy to remember, but at the same time, extremely effective and useful sura. To listen to Al-Ikhlas in Arabic, you can use video or MP3. The word "Al-Ikhlas" in Arabic means "Sincerity". Sura is a sincere declaration of love and devotion to Allah.

Description of Surah Al-Ikhlas

Sura "Sincerity" Allah sent down to the Prophet in Mecca. Al-Ikhlas contains 4 verses. Muhammad told his disciples that once he was mockingly asked about his attitude towards the Almighty. The answer was Surah Al-Ikhlas, which contains the statement that Allah is Self-sufficient, that He is One and Only in His perfection, that He has always been, and there is no one equal to Him in strength.

With the requirement to tell them about His God, the pagans who professed polytheism turned to the Prophet (peace be upon him). The literal translation of the question they used was "What is your Lord made of?". For paganism, a material understanding of God was common: they created idols from wood and metal, worshiped animals and plants. The answer of Muhammad (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) shocked the pagans so much that they abandoned the old faith and recognized Allah.

Many hadiths point to the benefits of Al-Ikhlas. Within the framework of one article it is impossible to name all the advantages of the sura, there are so many of them. Here are just the most important ones:

In one hadith it is said how Muhammad (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) turned to people with the following question: “Isn’t each of you able to read a third of the Qur’an in a night?”. The townspeople were amazed and asked how this was possible. The Prophet replied: “Read Surah Al-Ikhlas! It is equal to one third of the Qur'an." This hadeeth suggests that in the sura "Sincerity" so much wisdom is concentrated, how much can not be found in any other text. But not one thinking person is 100% sure that this is exactly what the Prophet said, word for word, so peace be upon him, even if this hadith (the word "hadith" is translated from Arabic as "story") is good in meaning, because if he (peace be upon him) him) did not say so, then this is a slander and a lie on the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).

It is important to know: all these hadiths may not be reliable. Hadiths must be looked at for their correspondence with the Qur'an. If a hadith contradicts the Qur'an, then it must be discarded, even if it somehow manages to be put into collections of reliable hadith.

Another hadith retells the words of the Prophet to us: “If a believer is fifty times every day, then on the Day of Resurrection a voice from above will be heard over his grave: “Arise, O praiser of Allah, enter Paradise!”. In addition, the Messenger said: “If a person reads Surah Al-Ikhlas a hundred times, then Almighty Allah will forgive him the sins of fifty years, provided that he does not commit four types of sins: the sin of bloodshed, the sin of acquisitiveness and hoarding, the sin of debauchery and the sin drinking alcohol." Saying a sura is a work that a person does for the sake of Allah. If this work is done with diligence, the Almighty will surely reward the one who prays.

Hadiths repeatedly point to the reward that is received for reading the sura "Sincerity". The reward is proportional to the number of readings of the prayer, the time spent on this. One of the most famous hadiths contains the words of the Messenger, demonstrating the incredible significance of Al-Ikhlas: “If anyone reads Surah Al-Ikhlas once, he will be overshadowed by the grace of the Almighty. Whoever reads it twice, then he and his whole family will be under the shadow of grace. If someone reads it three times, then he himself, his family and his neighbors will receive grace from above. Whoever reads it twelve times, Allah will grant twelve palaces in Paradise. Whoever reads it twenty times, he [on the Day of Judgment] will walk with the prophets like this (saying these words, the Prophet joined and raised his middle and index fingers) Whoever reads it a hundred times, the Almighty will forgive all his sins for twenty-five years except for the sin of bloodshed and the sin of default. Whoever reads it two hundred times, the sins of fifty years will be forgiven. Anyone who reads this surah four hundred times will get a reward equal to the reward of four hundred martyrs who shed blood and whose horses were wounded in battle. Whoever reads Surah Al-Ikhlas a thousand times, he will not die without seeing his place in Paradise, or until he is shown it.

Another hadith contains a kind of recommendation for people who are going on a journey or are already on the road. Travelers are instructed to recite Al-Ikhlas eleven times while grasping the doorposts of their house with both hands. If this is done, then the person will be protected on the way from shaitans, their negative impact and attempts to instill fear and uncertainty in the soul of the traveler. In addition, the recitation of the sura "Sincerity" is a guarantee of a safe return to places dear to the heart.

It is important to know: no sura in itself can help a person in any way, only Allah can help a person and believers rely on Him! And many hadiths, as we see, contradict the Koran - the direct speech of Allah Himself!

There is another option for reading Surah Al-Ikhlas - in combination with Al-Nas and Al-Falak. Each prayer is said three times. Reading these three suras is a protection from evil forces. As the prayer is said, it is necessary to blow on the person we want to protect. Surah is especially useful for children. If the baby is crying, screaming, kicking his legs, there are signs of the evil eye, be sure to try Al-Ikhlas, Al-Nas and Al-Falak. The effect will be stronger if you read the suras before going to bed.

Sura Yasin

The greatest surah of the Qur'an is Yasin. This sacred text should be taught by all Muslims. You can use audio recordings or videos to make it easier to remember. The Surah is quite large, it contains 83 verses.
