Memo to those who wish to receive the sacrament of holy baptism. Brief instructions for godparents and parents Memo for godparents

Catechization: A REMINDER FOR GODSPARENTS (SUCCESSORS).

Duties and Responsibilities of Godparents
towards the godparents

Baptism is the most important event in a person's life. Baptism opens the only way to salvation, to eternal life, gives great gifts, and together, imposes a great responsibility on a person for his soul and life given by the Creator . Know that the true purpose of Baptism is to be united with God in eternal life, and man forsake his sins. . The one who receives the Sacrament of Baptism outside of these goals (according to custom or superstition) and does not become a full-fledged member of the Church is comparable to a seed without a root that withers in the sun (Mark 4:5).

To perform the Sacrament of Baptism, the person being baptized must have recipient(i.e. godparent, godfather). It is hard to imagine that a child who has grown up on his own, without proper guidance, training and spiritual help, will confidently become a real Christian.

Dear godparents! You must not only love your spiritual child and take care of him, but, with the help of God, create in him a real Christian. Remember that you promise to bring your godson to God.

If you feel that you are not yet ready internally for the role of a godfather, it is better to refuse to be a godfather. At the very least, it will be more honest with the godson than taking responsibility for his spiritual upbringing and not fulfilling his promise.

In order to teach their godchildren the basics of the Christian faith, godparents themselves must have faith and certain knowledge. Whether to be a real Christian depends on the desire of a person and his determination.

Communicate confidentially with your godson, if it is a child, monitor his behavior at home and at school. Help him create a spiritual library that will include the Gospel, the Orthodox Prayer Book, the Psalter and other books. For young children, an illustrated children's Bible and an Orthodox audio and video library will be a good gift. Bring your godsons-infants to Communion more often (and help your parents in this): there is a lot of evil in today's world, and only spiritual weapons protect from spiritual danger. You can also bring children to the temple outside of service hours. There is no need to explain how important it is for a child from childhood, like a young plant, to take root and strengthen in the temple - a house of prayer, to be in it as in a familiar and familiar home!

So, godparents have the following responsibilities:

1. Prayer. The godfather is obliged to pray for his godson, and also, as the godson grows, teach him to pray so that he himself can communicate with God and ask Him for help in all his life circumstances.
2. Doctrine. Teach the godson the basics of the Christian faith.

3. Preacher. By your own and personal example, show the godson human virtues - love, kindness, mercy, diligence, honesty, etc., so that he grows and becomes a real Christian. We must not forget that Christian commandments begin with generally accepted human values.

About Godparents (Godparents)

The godfather and godmother should be looked for by parents with care, not lightly. The first condition is that the godfather must be a baptized Orthodox person, a believer, preferably a church person.

Godparents can also be:

1. Native grandparents, brothers and sisters, uncles and aunts - in exceptional cases. 2. Brother and sister, father and daughter, mother and son may be godparents of the same child. 3. You can become a godfather to different members of the same family.

Godparents cannot be:

1. Minors. 2. Parents of the baptized. 3. Monks and nuns. 4. Husband and wife, (or groom and bride) cannot be godparents of one baby; they can be godparents of different children in the same family.

The godmother's pregnancy is an acceptable condition for participation in the Sacrament of Baptism.

It should be remembered that a woman during the period of monthly cleansing cannot participate in Baptism (as well as in other Sacraments of the Church).

Conducting categorical conversations for godparents and baptized

During the Sacrament of Baptism, the person being baptized must consciously answer the priest’s question whether he renounces Satan and combines with Christ, and also read the Creed himself, a short text-prayer outlining the main dogmas of the Church. A child, especially a newborn baby, cannot say anything about his faith. Therefore, all the vows for him, as well as the Creed, are pronounced by his godfather - the godfather.

However, today many future godparents themselves have a vague idea of Christianity, they have never confessed or received communion, which puts them out of life with God and the Church, and testifies to their unpreparedness for the role of godparents. Even if an adult who has consciously come to Christ wants to be baptized, then preparation for entering the Church will be necessary for him.

With the blessing of the ruling bishop in the parishes of the Orthodox Church, for the recipients, as well as for those who are baptized over 12 years old, categorical (educational) conversations are held. During the conversation, the necessary allowances are issued, various issues are agreed upon.

In the event that future godparents have never taken part in the Sacraments of confession and communion, or have participated in them for a long time (up to several years), they confess and take communion.Godparents who regularly attend services and participate in the Sacraments are exempt from these requirements.

After Communion, the godparents ALWAYS inform the catechist about this.

The Sacrament of Baptism is performed ONLY after an entry in the Journal of Baptisms and after a conversation with a catechist.

The christening donation is made on the day of the christening.

Conversations are conducted by a catechist on Saturdays and Sundays during church opening hours, or by appointment

The Sacrament of Baptism in our church takes place

SATURDAYS at 10.30,

or on weekdays by agreement with the priest

Prepare everything you need for Baptism in advance: pectoral cross, rope (or chain), clean light towel, which should not then be used on the farm, And clean, light-colored clothes for changing without inscriptions and drawings.

All those present at the Sacrament of Baptism must be neatly dressed and have a pectoral cross on them. Women must wear a headscarf, be modest in the use of cosmetics (lipstick is not allowed).

It is desirable for newly baptized people to confess and take communion at the Liturgy in the near future. Children go to confession from the age of 7.

You can read more about the sacrament of baptism and the duties of godparents (in questions and answers)

You need to choose the temple in which you want to baptize the child.

To come to the temple and sign up for baptism, they usually write it down in a church shop.

Before baptism, it is necessary to go through conversations, which are called "catechumens". In some temples they take 1 day, in others 2 days. These conversations are recorded, as a rule, also in the church shop. Conversations provide the necessary knowledge about the Orthodox faith, about the sacrament of baptism. Also on the Baptism.ru website you can read interesting and useful articles about preparing for the sacrament of baptism.

During the sacrament of baptism, godparents read the “Symbol of Faith” prayer, read it in advance and try to understand the content of the prayer.

For the sacrament of baptism, you need to purchase: - a cross (Orthodox), - baptismal clothes: a shirt or dress for baptism, preferably white, - a towel or diaper, in which the godparents take the child from the font.

According to tradition, modest clothes are worn in the temple, women wear a headscarf and a skirt, men wear long sleeves. They do not talk in the temple, they try to listen to the prayers that the priest reads.

The baptismal ceremony takes about 40 minutes. There are many good articles on our site, religious scholars wrote:

    REMINDER

    preparing for Holy Baptism

Holy Baptism is a Sacrament in which the spiritual birth of a person for eternal life with God takes place.

It is desirable to perform baptism at the age of a child from 8 to 40 days, but if he is dangerously ill, then he should be baptized as early as possible. Those who were not baptized in childhood should be baptized at a conscious age. For this, faith in the God and Savior of the world, our Lord Jesus Christ, repentance in the former sinful life, familiarity with the basics of Christian doctrine and the desire to become a member of the Church of Christ are necessary.

At baptism, a promise is made to God to live according to His will, according to His commandments, and to avoid all evil, all sin, all communication with evil spirits.

An adult being baptized makes this promise himself, while at the baptism of an infant, this is done on his behalf by the recipients, i.e. godfather and mother. Thus, they take responsibility for the spiritual development of the child, for his upbringing in the Christian faith and for his communion with the Holy Church. Godparents must be Orthodox and pious people who confess regularly, and if they are married, then they are married in the Church. If the godmother has children, then they must all be churched

(the rite of churching must be performed over them). The godparents of one child should not be married to each other.

When preparing for baptism, it is necessary to have an interview with a priest. Adults who are preparing for baptism must appear for an interview themselves, but if a child is being baptized, then parents and godparents come to the interview.

Adults and recipients preparing for baptism must know the prayers as a keepsake: “Our Father”, “King of Heaven”, “It is worthy to eat”, “Virgin Mother of God, rejoice” and meaningfully read the Creed.

Without prior two interviews, baptism does not take place. If the recipients, parents or adults being baptized are ready for the Sacrament of Baptism, confessed and took communion, showed knowledge of prayers, the priest either blesses to be baptized in the near future and issues an appropriate certificate for presentation in the Candle Shop during registration, or gives instructions for their further preparation.

    PRAYERS :

    Lord's Prayer

Our Father, Thou art in Heaven! Hallowed be Thy Name, Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, as in Heaven and on earth. Give us our daily bread today, and forgive us our debts, just as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

    Prayer to the Holy Spirit

King of Heaven, Comforter, Soul of Truth, Who is everywhere and fills everything, Treasury of good things and Giver of life, come and dwell in us and cleanse us from all filth, and save, O Blessed, our souls.

Prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos

It is worthy to eat, as truly bless Thee, the Theotokos, the Blessed and Immaculate and the Mother of our God. The most honorable Cherubim and the most glorious without comparison Seraphim, without corruption of the God of the Word, who gave birth to the present Mother of God, we magnify Thee.

    Prayer

Virgin Mother of God, rejoice, Gracious Mary, the Lord is with you, blessed are you in women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, as if you gave birth to the Savior of our souls.

    Symbol of faith

I believe in the One God the Father, the Almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth, visible to all and invisible. And in the One Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Only Begotten, who was born of the Father before all ages. Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, uncreated, consubstantial with the Father, Whom all was. For the sake of us, for the sake of man, and for our salvation, who descended from Heaven, and became incarnate from the Holy Spirit and Mary the Virgin, and became human. He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and she suffered and was buried. And resurrected on the third day according to the Scriptures. And ascended into Heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father. And the packs of the future with glory to judge the living and the dead, His Kingdom will have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Life-Giving Lord, Who proceeds from the Father, Who with the Father and the Son bows and glorifies the prophet who spoke. Into the One Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the remission of sins. I look forward to the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the age to come. Amen.

    REMINDER for godmother/godfather

    1. A baby can scream three times as loud as three adults. This can adversely affect the health of adults who are close to the baby, so it is necessary to ensure that the baby is such that they cry as little as possible.

    2. If some items need to be stored out of the reach of children, it is better to take them out of the house or at least close them in a safe. Since any other place inaccessible to children can be gutted by a child in exactly 2 and a half minutes.

    3. The taste of lipstick is liked not only by men, but also by children. And the brighter the lipstick, the tastier it is for the baby. Keep lipsticks, especially bright ones, out of the reach of children (see point 2.)

    4. A tube of toothpaste is enough to paint half the wall not only in the bathroom, but also in the hallway.

    5. If the child wants to dust or mop the floors, give him a napkin or mop, otherwise the cleaning will be done by your blouse or used diaper.

    6. For some reason, the most important documents are torn in the first place (see point 2).

    7. The stomach can fit 3 huge servings of ice cream, but remember to leave room for at least one bowl of porridge or soup.

    8. In case of fire, call 01.

    9. Girls are given dolls, boys are given cars, women are given flowers and chocolate, and men don’t drink flowers and chocolate. The main thing is not to confuse anything!

    10. A godson remains a godson even when his own child acquires godparents.

    5. Fun with baptismal porridge

Rituals with baptismal porridge have long been part of christening script. We offer a modernized version of this ritual.

You will need a clay pot or porcelain tureen. Instead of porridge, you need to put gingerbread, sweets, nuts, etc. in the dishes. Someone dressed up as a grandmother can take out dishes with porridge to guests. The obligation to break the pot of porridge can be entrusted to the father of the hero of the occasion, grandfather or godfather. And you can do it differently - for example, sell the right to do it.

In this case, such an eyeliner is made:

Whoever breaks a pot of porridge - the angels smile at him and good luck comes. But right it comes at a cost! Come on, buy it!

Selling, of course, is better not for money, but for something intangible: for example, for the best ditty about babies. Although, if desired, you can hold a small cash auction.

To break the "pot of porridge", you need to wrap the bowl in a tablecloth and hit it on the floor. This is done by the one who was given the right to break the pot. The “grandmother” distributes the shards to the guests as a keepsake with a sentence:

Having received a shard, who is not married - marries, who is not married - will get married, who without children will give birth to children, who without grandchildren will nurse grandchildren.

In addition to the shards, guests must receive the contents of the pot and immediately eat at least a small part of the treat.

    6. Tests for godparents

Making up on christening script, be sure to include a few godparent challenges. For example, the ones below.

Godparents mom and dad compete in their "teaching skills"

    1. Knowledge of Russian folk tales. The godparents take turns naming the tales they will tell the godson. Whoever calls last, wins.

    2. The ability to make a toy out of nothing. Godparents are given fruits (banana, apple, tangerine), several vegetables, a knife and toothpicks. We need to make a doll. Whoever gets the most realistic and funniest wins.

    3. Collect toys. The godparents stand each near a separate chair. Various toys are scattered on the floor. At the same time, the godparents begin to collect toys from the floor: you need to take one toy, take it to your chair, put it on it, and then go for the next toy. Whoever manages to collect the most toys in the end wins.

    4. Team game "Chocolate". Godparents mom and dad pick up a team of 3-4 people. Godparents are given a large chocolate bar. They must divide the chocolate "by the windows" and distribute to the members of their team, and they must eat the chocolate slices as quickly as possible. Whose team eats the chocolate bar faster, that godparent wins.

    5. Team game "Charms". The host recalls that the pin is considered a powerful amulet and suggests preparing amulets for the hero of the occasion. Each team is given a long wide ribbon (blue or pink or tricolor) and a box with a large number of decorative pins. Teams simultaneously begin to fasten pins on the tape. Whose team can do it faster, that godfather wins.

    6. Riddles. Prepare the usual children's riddles and test the godparents. Whoever guesses the most wins.

The godfather who wins the most tests should be obliged to take patronage over the godfather and increase the level of his knowledge and abilities regarding the upbringing of children.

Scripting a christening for a girl or boy, do not plan noisy games, as this may wake the baby. But if the child is moved to another room in the middle of the celebration, you can sing - for example, divide the guests into two teams and arrange "Battle" on the knowledge of children's songs and lullabies.

A literal script can be found on the Internet and simply adjusted to suit yourself by adding something, removing something. I slapped this one (may be useful to someone): next post.

    My script

    We gathered for the christening

    Birthday Angel!

    Our baby for our joy

Was introduced into the sacred temple.

    Invited guests, sit down,

    Eat well.

    Eat and drink slowly

For the health of the baby!

    (First toast "For Dima")

Baptism is one of the seven sacraments of the Orthodox Church. New birth for spiritual life. And it is called a sacrament because through it, in a mysterious way, the invisible saving power of God, grace, acts on the person being baptized. At the moment of baptism, the Holy Spirit sanctifies the whole being of a person.

Let's raise our glasses to Dmitry, who was baptized today, and wish him the most important thing - good health, great happiness and a good fate.

There is an opinion that the fate of a person is influenced not only by the date of his birth and the sign of the Zodiac, but also by the name by which he was called. All this in combination with each other determines the character and life path of a person.

The name Dmitry is one of the most common male names today. It holds the fourth place in cities and the fifth in the countryside in terms of prevalence, on a par with Andrey, second only to Alexander, Sergey and Alexey.

It received a special peak of distribution in the 19th century, after which it did not slow down its popularity.

Like most popular names now, the name Dmitry got into the Russian language along with the adoption of Orthodoxy.

In Orthodoxy, the most revered patron of Dmitriev is Prince Dmitry Donskoy (name day is celebrated on June 1), the unifier of Russian lands.

The history of the origin of the name Dmitry has something in common with ancient Greek mythology. The name Dmitri means "pertaining to Demeter". Demeter is the goddess of earth and fertility. The Greeks began to honor her as the greatest goddess when agriculture became their main occupation. According to legend, Demeter taught people how to cultivate grain fields. Therefore, it is believed that Dmitry is the fruit of the earth.

Little Dmitrys usually look like their mother. As a child, Dima is very emotional, whims, constantly require attention, very active and mobile children.

They study well at school. Studying is given to them easily and he spends very little time on it. Mostly loves technical sciences. Quite often they suffer from respiratory diseases, but as they grow older, health becomes strong.

With age, Dimitri become surprisingly stubborn.

It acquires such qualities as courage, analytical mind, perseverance, ingenuity, diligence, sociability, practicality, enterprise, perseverance, charm, high morality.

Has business acumen. Strives to look fashionable and stylish.

Dmitry is a reliable and good friend. She loves comfort and coziness and spares no expense for it. In addition, he is a real esthete, so his chosen one must be beautiful, smart and economic.

She loves to travel and leads an active lifestyle. It is difficult for him to limit himself in anything.

Dmitry strive to achieve perfection in everything they undertake.

    (Second toast "For godparents")

But this is just in theory. In practice, it is clear that much in the formation of a person's personality depends on his upbringing, on the atmosphere in which the child grows up and, of course, on the parents who serve as an example to their child.

The godparents receive the baptized child from the hands of the priest. Hence the Slavic name - godparents. Thus, they take upon themselves the obligation to raise a child in the Orthodox spirit, monitor his morality, teach virtues and pray for him. And also help parents in raising their godson.

Let's raise our glasses to our godparents. We wish them health, patience and success in such a difficult task.

Nowadays, it is customary to read the so-called “Charter for the upbringing of a baptized child” at christening:

Charter for the upbringing of a baptized child.

Maintain good relations with the godparents of your child, regularly treating them with various goodies.

Provide the child and his mother with systematic rest on the sea beach under the hot sun.

Maintain friendly relations with the godparents of the child, regularly organizing meetings with them.

    Child's Responsibilities:

In response to parental care, the child undertakes not to scream in vain, not to break toys, not to wake up at night, not to get sick.

In relation to the Godparents, the baby undertakes to honor and respect them, listen to their good advice and be sure to invite them to his wedding.

    Responsibilities of Godparents:

Always remember your important role in the godson's life. Instruct the godson in spiritual literacy and pray for him.

Teach him only light, good, eternal.

To love and protect the godson as a native.

To give warmth and care to the godson, without demanding anything in return.

Give gifts to the godson in small and large quantities.

Do not forget to visit your godson at least once every 3 months.

Respect the parents of your godson and maintain good relations with them.

And remember that godparents are forbidden:

    Refuse to babysit your godson.

Forget to wish your godson a happy birthday.

Pampering a child with too expensive gifts or money.

And so that our godfathers will not forget, we will give them small reminders.

    (Presenting diplomas and memos).

The memo was a book . see next. magazine post

REMINDER FOR GODSPARENTS Dear godparents, before you become godparents, you must realize the full responsibility and importance of the upcoming event - the Sacrament of Baptism. You have a huge responsibility for the spiritual upbringing of your godchild; together with your parents, you are responsible for him before God. In order to teach their godchildren the basics of the Christian faith, godparents themselves must understand and be able to explain to the child what and in whom they believe. If you feel that you are not well informed on these matters, it is time to fill in the gaps in your knowledge of Orthodox Christianity. Today there is every opportunity for this: in church shops there is a lot of religious literature, including children's literature, which tells about God, Faith and the Church. Priests are always ready to discuss with you the issues of spiritual upbringing of children, in many churches training (disclosure) conversations are held with future godparents. A colorful edition of the children's Bible is a wonderful Orthodox gift for a child on Christening. During the Sacrament of Baptism, the Our Father and the Creed are read; the godfathers need to know these prayers by heart and understand their meaning. Before the Sacrament of Baptism, it is advisable to observe a three-day fast, confess and take communion. At Baptism, you should dress appropriately and be sure to put on a pectoral Orthodox cross. A woman must cover her head and wear a skirt below the knee. Mom and godmother cannot use lipstick - kissing a cross and kissing icons with painted lips is unacceptable. A man should not come to the temple in shorts and a T-shirt, despite the summer heat. Dear godparents and young mothers, remember that a woman should refrain from participating in church sacraments during the days of female infirmity. Therefore, do not plan the Baptism of a child for this period, and if, nevertheless, an unexpected thing happened and it is not possible to transfer the Sacrament, be sure to repent at confession with a priest. In addition, there are also prohibitions regarding the age, status and faith of future godparents: only adult believers baptized in Orthodoxy can become godparents. A husband and wife or a couple about to get married cannot become godparents. the spiritual kinship established between the recipients in the Sacrament of Baptism is higher than any other union, even marriage. For the Baptism of a child, you need to have a baptismal shirt, a diaper and a cross on a ribbon. It is better to take care of this in advance - sew or buy a lace baptismal set, choose a beautiful pectoral cross to your liking. Then in the temple you will only need to purchase candles, an icon of the heavenly patron as a gift from the godparents, take the payment or make a donation for the Sacrament. Dear godparents, remember that your role does not end after Baptism. By your own example, you must show the baby human virtues, teach the godson the basics of the Christian religion. You must teach your godchildren to resort to the saving Sacraments of confession and communion, you must give them knowledge about the meaning of worship, the peculiarities of the church calendar, and the blessed power of miraculous icons and other shrines. You must teach your godchildren to attend church services, fast, pray, and observe other provisions of the church charter. But most importantly, you should always pray to the Lord for your godson. Remember that you promised God to bring this baby to him. If you feel that you are not yet internally ready for the role of a godfather, it is better to refuse parents to become a godparent to their baby. At least it will be more honest with the child than taking responsibility for his spiritual upbringing and not fulfilling his promise.
